‘Silk Thread Martyrs’ Exhibition

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

The recent ‘Silk Thread Martyrs’ exhibition at The Mosaic Rooms gallery in London coincided with the opening of London fashion week.

The artist, OmarJoseph Nasser-Khoury, worked closely with Palestinian embroiderers, whose trade has been passed down through generations. The pieces produced were spectacular, luxurious and of rich detail. Each represented some aspect of the Palestinian cultural identity; ‘The Farmer’, ‘The Fighter’ and ‘The Martyr’ are some examples. Each piece expressed a history of cultural style and identity, through the medium of beautiful silk fabrics and silk embroidery.

The global appeal of silk for skilled designers and craftsmen is no mystery – this fabric has been the preferred choice of stylists for centuries. It is the perfect medium through which to express the combination of style, practicality and simple beauty which many cultures aspire to.

Why Choose a Silk Shirt?

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

If you are looking for the perfect shirt, for a friend, relative or for yourself, silk can be the ideal solution.  Let us look at some of the properties of silk which make for a practical, stylish and tactile shirt:

  1. Silk is practical all year round, as the thermal properties of the fabric will keep you cool in hot weather, and warm in cooler weather.
  2. Silk is famous for its incredibly soft texture and wonderful smoothness, and so silk shirts feel great against the skin, providing a luxurious texture and elegant drape that traditional cotton shirts simply cannot.
  3.  The exquisite silk shirts that we sell here at Silkwood Silk have a timeless elegance. They come in neutral colours so can be matched with many different outfits.

You can look classy and feel comfortable even when you are at your most casual, by matching a quality silk shirt with your favourite jeans.

Alternatively, you can create an elegant wedding outfit by matching up a dress suit with a simply beautiful silk blouse.  One thing is guaranteed: you’ll look and feel great whatever the occasion.

Showcase of Chinese Silk Clothing

Monday, February 7th, 2011

The Chinese Embassy and the Belarusian Fashion Center recently combined skills in an exciting collaboration, celebrating Chinese historical costume. China’s clothing culture has a long history, stretching back to over 5000 years ago, when the silk textile was first discovered and developed, as legend states, by the Chinese Empress XiLingJi. Since that time, the luxurious fabric has been used to create the picture of regality and elegance that Chinese formal dress has been renowned for through the ages.

The presentation featureed traditional costumes created and modelled by the Belurusians, designed with the knowledge and expertise at the Chinese Embassy. The Belarusian Fashion Center designers said that the collaboration has ‘given them a renewed love of working with Chinese silk, and that they have plans to create a summer collection with the help of this most beautiful of fabrics’.

Silkwood Silk sell a fantasic range of men’s silk shirts and womens silk shirts.

How to tie a perfect Half-Windsor tie

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Wearing a high quality silk tie, whether in a business or social setting, sets you apart from the crowd. There are a number of different ways to wear a tie. The Half-Windsor falls in the same category as the Windsor and holds a professional and prestigious reputation. It is not as large as the Full Windsor, making it the perfect companion for softer shirts and shirts with narrower collars.

To tie a Half-Windsor knot follow these steps:

1. Drape the silk tie around your neck with the pattern facing up. The thin end should fall about 12 inches from your neckline.

2. Cross the thick side of the tie over the thin side to make an X just below your the second shirt button.

3. Wrap the fat side behind the thin end and pull to the right, then up in front of it and down through the neck loop.

4. Pull the fat side over to the right and drape over the knot from right to left, overlapping your evolving knot.

5. Pull the fat side up through the loop again from back to front (close to your neck).

6. Push the fat end back down  through the knot.

7. To complete the sophisticated look, slightly tighten the knot and adjust to your preference.
